Onwards to Lewis and Harris

Today we moved on the our last island group for this holiday...Lewis and Harris. Despite it's name giving the appearance of two islands, it is actually only one. We were booked on the mid-morning ferry from Berneray so it was an early start as we had to cross North Uist. We arrived in plenty of time so we went around to the township for another look at the seals...and to find a geocache that we couldn't get at the other day when we visited.

Once on the ferry, we settled down for the most interesting ferry journey of all. Whereas every other ferry basically goes in a straight line from port to port, this ferry wanders around all over the place. The sea between Berneray and Harris is relatively shallow and littered with small islands...and the ferry has to pick a course through it all. Even when it looks like you could go straight, you still end up slaloming between the buoys.

Islands everywhere

Yet another turn...

Approaching Leverburgh
It was the middle of the day by the time we landed on Harris. With the afternoon before us, we explored the west side of the island, visiting a couple of nice white sandy beaches and finding the Clach Mhic Leoid standing stone. We then drove up to Tarbert...which is situated at the small neck of land that joins the southern portion of Harris to the remainder of Lewis and Harris...for some supplies as tomorrow was the Sabbath and nothing would be open.

With our shopping done, we then made our way...slowly...along the twistiest and hilliest single track road we had come across in our entire holiday...to our B&B in Finsbay. For dinner, we went out to the Rodel Hotel.
