Jarrold as our Guide...and a couple of Geocaches

Carol, our B&B host, loaned us a copy of Jarrold Short Walks for the Brecon Beacons and recommended we take the walk at Blaen-y-glyn. The good weather had returned so we set off past Brecon and through Pencelli and the Talybont Forest to the Lower Blaen-y-glyn car park. From here we took a very pleasant stroll up one side of the Caerfanell River to the falls. Crossing the river at the foot of the falls, we returned to the car down the other side.

Along the Caerfanell River on the way back to our car
We continued south over the Brecons, past the Pontsticill Reservoir and then east towards Blaenavon. Our target was to go in search of the first geocache ever placed in Wales...high on open moorland and promising marvellous views. Opting for a walk across the moors instead a hike up from Abergavenny, we parked in the nearest car park and set off...about 1.8 kilometres, a bit more than I was expecting. With the sun out, the views were fantastic as promised...you could see for miles in all directions. Eventually we reached the location of the cache...and I am pleased to say that I did find it after a little while searching.

You could see for miles in all directions
Found it!!!

The car is back that way...1.8 kilometres
By the time we got back to the car we wee both a bit tired so it was no more strenuous walks for the afternoon. Instead we drove down through Abergavenny and westward through Brecon to Trecastle. Here we turned south to go over the Brecons again by yet another route with the intention of coming back past Herbert's Quarry...this time in sunshine. Even though it meant we were driving many miles, it was really worth the effort for the views...and the geocache which had us clambering around the side of the hill like mountain goats.

High in the Brecons again
Welsh Ponies...it wasn't us that fed them
Up at the geocache...high above the road
Standing in the entrance to a cave
By the time we had finished chasing out the geocache it was getting quite late...time to head back to Defynnog and The Tanners Arms for dinner.

Defynnog is out there in the distance...somewhere
The Tanners Arms...a nice spot for dinner
