Today we had a free morning in Milan before heading off to the Italian Lakes so we decided to visit the Duomo...Milan's Cathedral. Not being big ones for soccer, we were surprised to find ourselves in the middle of the opening of the UEFA Champions Festival...the lead-up to the 2016 UEFA Champions League Final being held in Milan on the weekend.
As most people in the plaza were more interested in soccer than church, the queue to enter was rather modest. In what turned out to be a bit of a mistake afterwards, instead we went to the lifts for a ride up to the roof top of the cathedral. The views were stunning and we got to see the UEFA Champions Festival parade enter the plaza. By the time we got down, the celebrations were over and now there was a big queue to go inside. As it was now quite warm in the sun, we decided no to join the queue. It is always good to leave something to come back to...and we have for Milan.
We spent the rest of the morning wandering the streets through some quite up-market shops before finding ourselves in a park heading for a nearby Metro station. It was then back to our hotel to pick up our bags and taxi ride around Milan to the Milan Central railway station where we took a train to Varenna on Lake Como which is where we are staying.
As an introduction to Italian railways, this trip was not good...after walking all the way up the platform of a 10-car train we discovered that the only First Class carriage was locked off out of service. Like the others looking for First Class, we crowded into the adjacent Second Class carriage which was quite old and more like French third class...if they had such a thing.
Anyway, things got a lot better after we got to Varenna. We were picked up as planned by Maria, who owns the apartment we are staying in, and driven into the old town. The town is perched on the side of the hill leading down to the lake and it is all passageways and stairs to get around.
