As we were expecting, after yesterday's snow today started bright and sunny...and so we set off for Montenvers to see the Mer de Glace glacier. The trip there is quite as adventurous as the one up Aiguille du Midi as this one is by rack-railway climbing nearly 1000 metres above Chamonix.
We arrived at the top in beautiful sunshine and were able to look down onto the glacier. Unfortunately it was a bit difficult to tell what was glacier and what wasn't as everything was covered by 15 centimetres of fresh snow. Still the view was beautiful and worth the journey. While we had lunch, cloud blew up the valley and as the cable-car to the ice cave was closed for maintenance, it was time to head back down.
We spent the rest of the afternoon wandering around Chamonix and finding a couple geocaches to wrap up the French portion of our holiday.
Great train ride. You've certainly picked a very scenic spot.
